8/9/2018 Southeast Lower Peninsula, Michigan Fishing Report

Southeast Lower Peninsula

Lake Erie: Yellow perch were caught out of Bolles Harbor in 16 feet and near the E-Buoy and the Dumping Grounds in 22 to 24 feet on spreader rigs with green spinners and crappie rigs with orange and chartreuse.  A few limit catches were taken along the Dumping Grounds and the E-Buoy with orange or chartreuse spoons with deep divers, wiggle warts, crank baits or hot-n-tots.  Walleye limits were taken in 25 feet off the River Raisin with fire-tiger crank baits or in 21 to 23 feet between Stony Point and Fermi with bandits or when trolling a green, purple or chartreuse crawler harness.  White bass, white perch, freshwater drum and large channel cats were also caught.  Those targeting the Hot Ponds were taking a good number of catfish on shrimp or crawlers.  Largemouth bass were hitting spinners and twister tails at the mouth of the River Raisin and the Hot Ponds.

  • If you're planning on fishing any of the canals near Lake Erie Metro Park or Point Mouillee State Game Area you can get all of your bait & tackle needs met at  Bottom Line Bait & Tackle
  • If you're planning on fishing out of Sterling State Park or the Brest Bay area you can pick up tackle from the nice people at Jeff's Bait & Tackle.

Detroit River:  Shore anglers are getting bass and catfish on crawlers, shrimp or crayfish.  Boat anglers were using crawlers, shrimp or green worms.  Walleye were found in 13 to 20 feet along the weed beds with a jig and worm or crawler harness.  Yellow perch were in five to nine feet or so along the weed beds around the islands.  Most were using perch rigs.  A couple muskie were taken on large spinners or jigging baits.

Lake St. Clair:  Walleye anglers trolling with crawlers and crankbaits were able to harvest a few fish in deep water near the St. Clair Light, on the back side of Strawberry Island in 20 to 25 feet, in the
shipping channel and at the mouth of the Middle Channel.  Yellow perch numbers were increasing out in front of the Selfridge Air Base when drifting crawlers on drop-shot rigs just off the bottom.  Muskie and a couple good size pike were caught while casting and trolling in 15 to 20 feet in Anchor Bay and near the Dumping Grounds.  Bass anglers were targeting fish in deep water near the shipping channel, the three channel mouths of the St. Clair River, off the Mile Roads or in 10 to 12 feet in Anchor Bay.  Try soft plastics like tube baits and fish them slow.

Port Sanilac:  Perch fishing declined.  Steelhead action is picking up along the outside of the Thumb.  The hot spot for steelhead outside of Thumb was off Forester which is about five miles north of the port.  Those trolling were getting two to five steelhead per trip when trolling spoons about halfway down in 120 feet.  Spoon color did not matter, you just need to find the fish.  Pier and river fishing is limited to catfish, drum and a few bass.

Harbor Beach Fishing was slow as the fish were scattered and only a few were taken in the early morning.  Try running spoons from top to bottom or dodgers with spin-glo’s near the bottom.  Start in 80 feet and work your way out to deeper water north of the harbor.  For steelhead, try bright colored spoons.  Walleye were scattered but water temperatures were finally starting to warm so the bite should improve.  Try small spoons, harness or hot-n-tots.

Grindstone City:  Anglers were getting lots of lake trout in 130 to 135 feet.

Port Austin:  Walleye fishing slowed.  It seems the walleye fishery just never really developed here this summer.

Saginaw Bay:  We are in the mid-summer fishing mode and the walleye are out deep for the most part.  Walleye fishing in the inner bay is spotty as the fish are scattered.  The most consistent area was near Buoys 1 & 2 at the end of the shipping channel in 30 feet or more.  Walleye continue to be caught at most locations if anglers put in enough time.  Try the shallow side of the Slot between Sebewaing and Sand Point in 10 to 12 feet.  Crawler harnesses seem to work best though some were also using spoons or crank baits.  Perch fishing was starting to pick up in several locations especially in the Old Shipping Channel off the mouth of the Saginaw River in 17 feet.  Other spots include Sailboat Buoys A & B or F & G off Linwood and the Spark Plug at Buoys 11 & 12.  The fish range eight to 10 inches.   Limits are possible but not the norm.
