Northeast Lower Peninsula
Cheboygan: Anglers have been catching Atlantics, Chinook, lake trout, steelhead and walleye in 60 to 100 feet off Lafayette Point and Lighthouse Point on Bois Blanc Island. The fish were hitting on spoons, spin-glo’s and meat rigs. Lake trout were caught off Spectacle Reef and Chinook were caught around Mackinac Island and the Straits with spoons and meat rigs.
Cheboygan River: Fishing slowed but those using worms, leeches, soft plastics or spinners caught the occasional walleye, smallmouth, rock bass, and freshwater drum.

Hammond Bay: Anglers caught Atlantic and Chinook salmon as well as lake trout on spoons in 60 to 90 feet off Nine Mile Point. The Atlantics were taken in the top 30 feet and averaged five pounds. The Chinook were about 10 pounds.
Rogers City: Had decent fishing as anglers took Chinook, Atlantics, coho, lake trout, steelhead and the odd walleye. The thermocline was higher, so anglers were targeting 50 to 120 feet. Deploy your lines throughout the water column. Spoons worked best and the hot colors were green, blue, orange, green and blue, black and white or glow early and late. Flashers with flies, squid and cut bait were taking some of the bigger fish.

Alpena: When they can get out, boat anglers headed to the “Humps”, Thunder Bay Island and the Nine Mile Can for the best results. Most were targeting lake trout near the bottom with spoons or flashers with flies, squid and spin-glo’s. Walleye were caught south towards Scarecrow Island and Black River or near Sugar Island and Thunder Bay Island with crawler harnesses and crank baits.

Thunder Bay River: Boat and shore anglers caught freshwater drum. small bass, rock bass, channel catfish and the occasional walleye with leeches and crawlers.
Black River: Anglers were targeting walleye between Black River and South Point when trolling stick baits. Pike were caught in the river when casting crank baits.
Harrisville: Lake trout were taken 100 to 140 feet between the harbor and Sturgeon Point when trolling spoons and spin-glo’s with dodgers in the bottom 20 feet. Walleye were taken in 20 to 35 feet in the early morning when trolling stick baits off Sturgeon Point as well as south of the harbor.
Oscoda: Steelhead, lake trout, and the odd Atlantic or small Chinook were taken by anglers trolling spoons, meat rigs and spin-glo’s with dodgers 35 to 65 feet down in 85 to 130 feet. Lake trout were also caught in the bottom 30 feet around the drop-off. Quite a few suspended walleye were caught incidentally by those trolling spoons for salmon and trout. Anglers still-fishing crawlers and leeches from the pier caught channel catfish, smallmouth bass, or a few walleye. The catfish bite was best in the evening.

Au Sable River: Those still-fishing and drifting crawlers in the lower river caught smallmouth bass, rock bass, freshwater drum, and a few small walleye. Those casting spinners caught pike while smallmouth bass were taken on poppers or a weed less soft plastic. Smallmouth bass, small walleye, and a few nice pike have been caught on streamers or when casting crank baits between Mio, Alcona, and Loud Dam.

Higgins Lake: Lake trout were caught when trolling or jigging just off the bottom in 90 to 120 feet. A couple rainbow trout were caught in 60 to 70 feet off Big Creek and the South State Park. Perch were found in 40 to 50 feet off the south end of the Sunken Island and Treasure Island. Smallmouth bass and lots of rock bass have been caught throughout the lake.

Houghton Lake: Walleye were caught by those trolling a crawler harness tipped with crawlers or leeches along the drop-off in eight to 12 feet. Pike have been caught throughout the lake. Bluegills were in the weed beds in six to eight feet.

Tawas: Walleye trollers just outside Tawas Bay were doing well around Buoy #2 in 35 to 70 feet and bringing back some limits on a harness. They’re also fishing up towards Au Sable Point and getting some steelhead, Atlantics and walleye. Inside Tawas Bay, walleye were caught around Buoys 4 & 6.

Au Gres: Walleye fishing slowed some; but they are still getting fish between Point Lookout and Pointe Au Gres in 20 to 40 feet or out deeper off the Gravelly Shoals and Big Charity Island. Perch anglers were getting fish off the mouth of the Pine River and off Eagle Bay Marina in 10 to 20 feet. Those targeting catfish have also done well.
