7/04/2018 Southwest Lower Peninsula, Michigan Fishing Report

Southwest Lower Peninsula

St. Joseph:  Anglers caught a few Chinook and lake trout in 100 feet.  There is some good coho fishing however the fish were out very deep.  Perch fishing was decent north and south of the piers in 25 feet.  Pier anglers are catching lots of drum and catfish.  Steelhead fishing slowed with the increased water temperatures.

St. Joseph River:  Watch for strong east winds that bring in cold water and move steelhead up into the fish ladder at Berrien Springs.

Muskegon Lake:  Fishing continues even in the heat.  The walleye bite was a bit slower but anglers were catching bass and panfish.  The better bass fishing was early morning or late evening off the State Park, in the channel and around any structure with live or artificial baits.  Bluegills were in the shallows however some of the bigger fish were out in deeper water and hitting on leeches.

Whitehall:  Boats trolling 40 to 90 feet down in 130 to 240 feet between Meinert Park and Stony Lake caught lake trout, steelhead, and Chinook salmon on blue or green spoons and meat-rigs.  Pier anglers caught largemouth bass and freshwater drum on jigs tipped with soft plastics or the occasional steelhead while casting spoons or still-fishing with frozen shrimp and alewife.

White Lake:  Bass anglers had success in six to 15 feet when casting body baits, jigs tipped with minnows or crayfish imitations along the bottom. Panfish anglers caught good numbers of bluegills and pumpkinseed sunfish in three to 10 feet when drifting red worms or wax worms under a bobber.
